EndNote 2025

How can I import my references from a Word document via an XML-file in Endnote?

You can use AnyStyle.io to make a BibTeX (.bib) file that reference management tools can use to import many citations.

NOTE: AnyStyle.io is not part of the Amsterdam UMC software package, so we do not offer further assistance.

However, EndNote’s BibTeX import doesn’t always work well, so adding your bibliography to EndNote might be harder than expected.

Still, you can try the steps below to import it.

How to Import a BibTeX File (.bib) into EndNote

  1. Go to AnyStyle.io and follow the steps to turn your typed bibliography into a file.

  2. Choose BibTeX as the file format.

  3. In EndNote, click File → Import → File...

  4. Find and select the BibTeX file you saved in step 2.

  5. Under Import Option, choose BibTeX (you might need to click Other Filters... to find it).

  6. Click Import.

If this doesn’t work, there’s another way. You can first import the BibTeX file you made with AnyStyle.io into Zotero (another reference manager). Then, export the citations from Zotero in a format that EndNote can import more easily. The steps for this are shown below.

How to Convert a BibTeX File to an .RIS File Using Zotero

In Zotero Desktop:

  1. Click File → Import.

  2. Choose A file (BibTeX, RIS, Zotero RDF, etc.), then click Next.

  3. Find and open the .bib file you downloaded from AnyStyle.io.

  4. Check the box that says “Place imported collections and items into a new collection”, then click Next.

  5. Click Finish.

  6. In My Library, right-click the new folder with the same name as your file, and choose Export Collection...

  7. Select RIS as the format, then click OK to save your bibliography as an .ris file.

In EndNote:

  1. Click File → Import → File...

  2. Select the .ris file you exported from Zotero.

  3. For Import Option, choose Reference Manager (RIS).

  4. Click Import.

You should now see your bibliography added to your EndNote library.

After importing, make sure to look over your references to check that everything is correct.

NOTE:

A BibTeX file is a plain text file with the .bib extension that stores bibliographic information such as articles, books, and dissertations. It is used with the LaTeX typesetting system to automatically generate reference lists by citing this information through a unique key in the text. BibTeX files organize references in a standardized format, making them easy to export and import between different software applications.
