What is 'Cite While You Write' (CWYW) ?

Cite While You Write or CWYW is an automatically installed plug-in when you install EndNote on your computer.

It enables Word and EndNote to work together to produce your in-text citations and bibliography.

When it is properly installed you will see an EndNote tab (Windows) or toolbar (Mac) in your Word program.

 

 

How to install EndNote in Word:

  1. Download and install EndNote

    • Make sure you have EndNote software installed on your computer. You can buy it or sometimes get it through 

  2. Check if the Word plugin is installed

    • During the EndNote installation, a plugin (also called an add-in) for Word is usually installed. This lets you use EndNote inside Word.

  3. Open Microsoft Word

    • Start Word on your computer.

  4. Look for the “EndNote” tab

    • At the top of Word, you should see a new tab named “EndNote” (or “EndNote X9”, “EndNote 20”, depending on your version).

  5. If you don’t see the EndNote tab:

    • Go to File > Options > Add-ins.

    • Look under “Disabled Items” or “COM Add-ins.”

    • Click “Go” next to “COM Add-ins.”

    • Check the box for EndNote and click OK.

    • Restart Word.

  6. Using EndNote in Word

    • Click the EndNote tab to insert references, add citations, and manage your bibliography.
